Frederick C. Montney III was born at the base hospital, Camp Pendleton, CA. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 15 October 1974 and underwent recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego CA. Upon graduation he attended Communication School, San Diego, CA. where he received orders to Marine Corps Air Station, Futenma, Okinawa, Japan during July 1975.

After successfully completing his tour in Futenma he transferred to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC for duty with the base's communication center.

In 1978 after completing his tour at Cherry Point, Corporal Montney received an honorable discharge from the Corps and returned to Denver, Colorado to work as a computer programmer.

In May 1979, Corporal Montney decided he missed the Marine Corps and re-enlisted. He reentered as a corporal and received orders to Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28, 2nd Marine Air Wing, Cherry Point, NC where he served from May 1976-July 1981.

Upon completion of this tour, Sergeant Montney was transferred to 3rd Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan where he served from July 1981-July 1982 as Communication Chief, for the Division/Marine Expeditionary Force Communication center.

From July 1982-June 1985, Staff Sergeant Montney served as the Career Planner for Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, NC.

He later transferred to 3rd Maintenance Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group (FSSG), Okinawa, Japan, from 1985-1988 serving as the career planner. While in this capacity, he was selected to become the 3rd FSSG's career planner.

Following this tour, he received orders to Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington DC as the assistant operations chief for Headquarters Marine Corps communication center. During the Gulf War, Gunnery Sergeant Montney was the Commandant's Communication Center Chief.

From July-Nov 1991, Gunnery Sergeant Montney was assigned to the Operational Communications Chief Course at 29Palms, CA. Upon completion of school he received orders to Marine Wing Communications Squadron 18, 1st Marine Air Wing, Okinawa, Japan as the Field Message Center Chief. While in this capacity he was deployed as the 1st Marine Air Wing Information Systems Chief for Thailand and the Philippines.

Reassigned during October 1992, Gunnery Sergeant Montney was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 474, US Naval Base, Philadelphia PA, as the Communications Chief. Upon closure of the Naval Base, he was reassigned to MWSS-474, Naval Air Station Willow Grove, PA. While in this billet, Master Sergeant Montney was assigned to his last position as the Information Systems Chief for Marine Aircraft Group 49 and retired on 1 December 1996.

Master Sergeant Montney has been on many 'short term' assignments that have placed him in some of the following countries: USSR, Turkey, Norway, Spain, Cuba, Okinawa, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, Korea and Japan to mention only a few.

Master Sergeant Montney is married to the former Susan Mildred Teter of New Jersey and they have three children.

Master Sergeant Montney's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal second award, Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal with silver star, National Defense Service Medal with one star, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with two stars, the Overseas Service Ribbon with two stars and numerous Certificates of Commendation.

Retired on active duty with over 22 years service to God, Country and Corps.
